How do you consume nutrients?

Are you disgusted by certain textures, partial to a particular brand, or flat out against eating some foods?


Do you have a favorite bowl, spoon, cup or other dish that you always use?

I've seen a lot of discussions lately around the #AutismCommunity about food shaming. Which to me is totally ridiculous as a wellness coach. The way to encourage a healthy lifestyle is not by shaming others. Quality support professionals know that all change is not for everybody.

Personally I can totally relate to being grossed out to the point of illness by food. I remember when I was a kid my granny forced me to eat soft eggs and needless to say she ended up with my partially digested egg all over her. She was not happy. I would have been more amused if I wasn't already devastated and in meltdown mode.

I don't eat mushy stuff for the most part, with very little exceptions. No whipped, no creams, no , no processed meat, no soft fleshy fruits, and absolutely NO soft eggs. I'm probably worse than I would be if not for that one incident because now I don't even like them to be bright yellow or opaque white... And I don't even eat hard ones on a regular basis. 🤢

I do like ice cream even though I don't eat it anymore. I also liked mashed, etc potatoes, sweet potatoes and yams. I even psych myself into a dab or two of avocado, half a banana, or a couple bites of liver, all of which I hate, but I know I need on occasion. I think it's easier to do when it's your own reasoning and choice rather than a demand that isn't logical.

What food did you stock up on more than others because you couldn't live without it, or because was the only thing available?

 

Some of us have preferences besides food, like my favorite spoon, ironically because it reminds me of my granny's house.

If you try to judge the reasoning behind it, it may seem ridiculous to you. But why do adults need anyone else's approval on our personal food preferences? We do not. I'm simply sharing to bring awareness and to let my fellow Autistic know, it's okay. If you have to survive quarantine by eating cereal every day, that's your business.


I will only advise, as someone who made wellness my special interest, because I didn't want to be sick all the time. Personally dealing with bronchitis, upper respiratory infections, yeast infections, step throat, and even once diagnosed with asthma was worse than the soft eggs. I never ever want to go through that torture again in life. So I found the root cause and I killed it. Now cheesy food and sugary deserts gross me out almost as much as soft eggs. Because that's how the human brain works. ABA, bullying, and shaming do not work and cause more harm to the victim. 

Making logical decisions on our own because that's what makes sense to us is a whole different animal and anyone from NT to Autistic is capable of doing this. If you are suffering from any ailments that are exacerbated by unhealthy foods, consider doing some research, shift your thinking and make some decisions you can live with. Don't just be a slave to what's available or what you've always eaten. If you are reading this, you don't have to settle and you absolutely are capable of making different choices, even if you have to trick yourself like I do. I only stomach a banana here and there because it helps keep my potassium levels up so I don't get in my legs cramps from not eating a lot of carbs. An occasional banana is less horrible than knee, leg, and /or foot cramps.

We are not the same. We are all different and yet our experiences and lessons can help one another. I hope my food journey can help others to liberate themselves too. If you have questions or just want to talk about it, leave a comment or shoot me a note.
